Many congregations gather as a group for the study other WELS members connect as couples or individuals. We’ve been amazed at how many abilities our participants have as gifts from God. Thousands of WELS members have participated in the Interactive Faith Bible studies, which are held twice a year and led by a WELS pastor or professor. We are trying to be faithful stewards with all of the abilities we have. Please look at our work and the EHV as an attempt to serve the Triune God with the gifts he has given us. We are encouraging our publisher to get copies of the EHV into as many bookstores as possible. We are hoping to share God’s Word widely. We plan to make the EHV available to many churches, authors, and people on the most agreeable terms. We hope and pray that it will be used in worship, Bible study, home devotions, and Christian literature. We hope and pray that the EHV will be used by many people. Historically, the term refers to the predominantly Russian-speaking regions north of the Black Sea that formed the “Novorossiya” governorate under Catherine II. Vladimir Putin himself has repeatedly hinted at seeing a future for eastern and southern Ukraine under the Novorossiya banner. The myth of Novorossiya is seen by some as a powerful motivator for Russia’s years-long meddling in Ukrainian affairs. This failure is a bellwether for the ineffectiveness of Russian propaganda: not only has Russia failed to convince Russian-speaking Ukrainians that they are the victims of “genocide” and that “fascists” control the Kyiv government, it also completely neglected to provide a convincing alternative to Ukrainian nationhood. As an ideological project, it has failed to take hold in the minds of those living on its supposed territories in eastern and southern Ukraine, and was abandoned by Russia and the authorities of the “People’s Republics” of Donetsk and Luhansk as soon as it became politically inconvenient. In reality, there never was a Novorossiya. Since 2014, Putin, the Kremlin’s propaganda strategists, and insurgents in the “People’s Republics” of Donetsk and Luhansk repeatedly referred to “Novorossiya” as one of the justifications for Russia’s invasion. The term, which means “New Russia”, is meant to conjure up feelings of a restored Russian empire and righting the historical “wrong” of assigning Russian lands under Ukrainian jurisdiction. This effort has failed to build support for Russia among Russian-speaking Ukrainians, especially in Donbas.Ī key example is the myth of “Novorossiya”. Russia's years-long information war was instrumental in informing Putin's decision to invade Ukraine. ![]() Installs easily on almost any bike, including 27.5 and 29'ers. However, they can be produced at home by using bleach, and can be stabilized by precipitation with barium. These are only stable in strongly basic solutions and will degrade after about a day. This can be used to make fake blood as a party trick.īoth oxidation states readily from complexes with water, cyanide, nitrous oxide (ferrous only) and oxalates (ferric only) įerrates(VI) are compounds of iron in the +6 state. When an iodide-containing solution is added to a solution containing ferric ion, iron(II) iodide and iron precipitate.Ī relatively sensitive test for ferric iron is the addition of thiocyanates, which form a deep red complex. Iron(III) iodide is unstable with respect to disproportionation. Ferric compounds, such as iron(III) chloride, are strongly Lewis acidic. A small amount of acid will turn this solution clear as the 2+ is converted to 3+. One example is iron(III) nitrate: it is lavender in the solid state, but dissolves to form a rust-colored solution, with the dominant iron species being 2+. However, interesting color changes may occur due to complex formation. ![]() This is a source of annoyance for most chemists. The ferric state of iron is only soluble in acidic solutions and will quickly convert to hydrous iron(III) oxide if the acidity is reduced. Solid iron(II) sulfate may oxidize in air to form iron(III) oxide deposits. In basic solution, however, iron(II) oxide will precipitate and be oxidized by water to iron(III) oxide. The ferrous state of iron is normally soluble in water and is resistant to oxidation in acidic solution. Iron metal will react with diluted acids, such as hydrochloric acid, but passivates in contact with concentrated acids, such as nitric acid or phosphoric acid. In solution, iron tends to form ferrous salts, but the addition of hydrogen peroxide (and often atmospheric oxygen) will promote the formation of ferric compounds. It will also react with sulfur at elevated temperatures if finely divided to form iron sulfide (FeS). Iron reacts with the halogens to form its halide salts. Magnetite may be produced by ignition of steel wool. It also will form mixed valence compounds like magnetite (Fe 3O 4), that contain both ferrous and ferric state iron in their structure. Iron reacts with air in the presence of water to form Fe 2O 3, commonly known as rust. Other oxidation states are possible present no interest to the amateur chemist. Iron forms compounds most commonly found in it's ferrous(II) and ferric(III) oxidation states, but it can exist in the (IV) and (VI) valence states as ferrates. ![]() Very pure single-crystal iron, used for research purposes, is far weaker structurally than aluminum metal. It is known to exist in four allotropes, and it may exist in a fifth. It is commonly known to be ferromagnetic, the word being partially derived from the Latin word for iron. It has a melting point of 1538 degrees C. ![]() I never did know what happened to him after that, but I know they didn’t bring him back. “I did everything for that horse,” Ross told me. Then, when Ross was 10 years old, a group of white men demanded his only childhood possession-the horse with the red coat. Clyde Ross did not, and thus lost the chance to better his education. It was too far for Ross to walk and get back in time to work in the fields. Ross’s teacher believed he should attend the local Rosenwald school. But Julius Rosenwald, a part owner of Sears, Roebuck, had begun an ambitious effort to build schools for black children throughout the South. There was very little support for educating black people in Mississippi. His teacher thought he should attend a more challenging school. “Some of the land taken from black families has become a country club in Virginia,” the AP reported, as well as “oil fields in Mississippi” and “a baseball spring training facility in Florida.”Ĭlyde Ross was a smart child. The land was taken through means ranging from legal chicanery to terrorism. The series documented some 406 victims and 24,000 acres of land valued at tens of millions of dollars. In 2001, the Associated Press published a three-part investigation into the theft of black-owned land stretching back to the antebellum period. And so for the upkeep of separate but equal, the entire Ross family was reduced to sharecropping. Effectively, the Ross family had no way to contest the claim and no protection under the law. He could not expect the police to be impartial. He did not know anyone at the local courthouse. When Clyde Ross was still a child, Mississippi authorities claimed his father owed $3,000 in back taxes. “You had to sneak away.” “Some of the land taken from black families has become a country club in Virginia,” the AP reported. “You didn’t talk about it or tell nobody,” Earvin said. In her 2010 book, The Warmth of Other Suns, Isabel Wilkerson tells the story of Eddie Earvin, a spinach picker who fled Mississippi in 1963, after being made to work at gunpoint. Well into the 20th century, black people spoke of their flight from Mississippi in much the same manner as their runagate ancestors had. Refusing to work meant arrest under vagrancy laws and forced labor under the state’s penal system. A man or woman who protested this arrangement did so at the risk of grave injury or death. When farmers were deemed to be in debt-and they often were-the negative balance was then carried over to the next season. Tools and necessities were advanced against the return on the crop, which was determined by the employer. Many of Mississippi’s black farmers lived in debt peonage, under the sway of cotton kings who were at once their landlords, their employers, and their primary merchants. The state’s regime partnered robbery of the franchise with robbery of the purse. “You do it the night before the election.” “You and I know what’s the best way to keep the nigger from voting,” blustered Theodore Bilbo, a Mississippi senator and a proud Klansman. Between 18, more black people were lynched in Mississippi than in any other state. The majority of the people in the state were perpetually robbed of the vote-a hijacking engineered through the trickery of the poll tax and the muscle of the lynch mob. ![]() In the 1920s, Jim Crow Mississippi was, in all facets of society, a kleptocracy.
